Here goes nothing…. and I actually do mean here goes nothing! My friends have been telling me to start a blog for a while but I always wondered who would be interested in what I have to say? After all, it’s not as though I am a brilliant scientist who has discovered some cure for say Covid… nor am I a film star who everyone wants to know minute details about… I am not even a serious writer… my only claim to fame are my ‘movie reviews ‘ on Facebook which concentrate more on the flavour of the popcorn I ate than on the actual film! So I am Sunita Goenka aged 60 plus (I’m actually nearly 65 but I believe it is fashionable to claim you are younger than you really are! I was born in Bombay, went to Manchester, England when I was about 6 months old and was brought up and educated there until I got married in 1980 at which time I moved to Calcutta. So you must be wondering how on earth a person who has lived her whole life in England, who still has a very strong Mancunian accent despite having lived in Calcutta for 43 years, settled down in India. I actually put it all down to the upbringing my parents gave me. My mother was the traditional Indian housewife who lived to feed her family delicious meals cooked by her. And my father was the hard working male who built up an empire from nothing. Whilst they were both quite conservative they appreciated that we were living in a foreign country and they adapted accordingly. We didn’t have a lot of money whilst we were growing up but we did have an abundance of love and laughter helped by the fact that my dad brought over my Chachas, Chachis and cousins so we were all a very close family who didn’t need any outsiders. I think this is one thing our children nowadays don’t really value… how important your family is. For me personally, my family is everything whether it be my fathers side, my mothers side or my in laws.
