THE TAJ STORY-MOVIE REVIEW

The Taj Story… The first time I saw the Taj Mahal must have been about 50 years ago when my father took us all on one of our annual trips to India. The sheer enormity of it blew me away but  funnily what I remember the most was how much my feet got burnt on the scorching hot marble as we toured around the structure in bare feet! We used to buy numerous small models of the Taj from Cottage Industries to take back to Manchester for gifting. I truly appreciated the beauty and awesomeness of this monument when I went about 25 to 30 years later when Vinay and I took Vivek and Rashi. When I stood in front of the Taj it literally took my breath away… the size.. the sunlight shining off the magnificent white marble. It truly is a sight to be seen.

So when this film came out I was more than happy to go watch it. One has heard and read about various theories about the Taj but this film really brings out all the questions in a very entertaining manner. Paresh Rawal, as usual, acts brilliantly as the guide Vishnu Das and literally carries the whole film on his shoulders. The cinematography is beautiful and really captures the wonders of this building. The arguments, though rather long do not become preachy and at the end you start questioning everything you have learnt about the Taj and you are left wanting more. Sometimes the film veers a bit towards politics too much but all in all I really enjoyed it and although nearly 3 hours long I was not bored or looking at my watch. If you like masala mirch movies then this is not for you but I thoroughly enjoyed it and Rawal manages to even interject some good humour in the court scenes with his quick witty replies and counter arguments. I am glad I went 😀

Couldn’t resist posting this iconic photo of all of is on the famous ‘bench’ in front of The Taj Mahal!!!
