I had written about the first film in my earlier blog and in fact the only reason I saw it was because I knew that Vinay was very keen to see Part 2 so rather than him going alone I thought I would make the effort to watch it and it actually worked out quite well as I did enjoy the film despite my earlier misgivings. We couldn’t go during the first week it was released but Vinay kept a close eye on when ticket sales opened for the Saturday show. He was extremely excited when bookings opened and after much discussion and deliberations I booked our tickets for last Saturday. Can you imagine my surprise on Saturday morning when Vinay suddenly announced that he hadn’t slept well the previous night and could I find a friend to go with. I told him I would gladly pass also but he was very insistent that I go so fortunately my friend Monisha was happy to join me. We went to the 1.15 pm show so we decided to have our lunch in the hall and we spent quite a while discussing the pros and cons of various dishes and having selected…. Baked khichdi for me and a kind of vada pao for Moni we settled down to watch the film.
The running time of the film is a mammoth 229 minutes and then considering we had to sit through nearly 30 mins of ads before and 25 minutes during the interval we knew we were in for the long haul. This film was written, produced and directed by Aditya Dhar and hats off to him. How on earth did he dream up so many macabre ways of killing and torturing people? If you thought the first film was gruesome then just imagine this was the first but on steroids!!! There was no end to smashing faces into walls to stabbing people with iron picks and even chopping one persons head right off his neck and waving it in the air clutching his hair. It was just too too much and so ridiculous that both Moni and I were laughing away when these scenes were shown. He showed this gruesomeness to another level and it seemed as if it was almost forced as the audience expected it. You have to know when enough is enough and it didn’t enhance the film whatsoever. During the first film I never looked at my watch in boredom but this time round I was just waiting for it to finish. Of course Ranveer Singh acted really well but one expects that. The roles played by Sanjay Dutt and Arjun Rampal were made for them and they both did well. I liked Madhavan in both films but I did miss Akshay Khanna this time around. The music also was not as good as the former film. I find that sequels to first films never live up to the hype but I guess that looking at the revenue,
Rs 1,400 + crores in worldwide sales, Dhar will say otherwise. However, if you ask me, I personally wouldn’t bother to run to the hall to watch this film. Sit in the comfort of your own home with your remote handy and fast forward the film to watch it in two hours. The rest is just rubbish and can be avoided.
