I really had a movie bonanza weekend… The Taj Story yesterday and Haq today and I must say that I enjoyed both films. It’s been ages since two good films have come out together and Vinay has suddenly developed a great fondness for going to the theatre so buckle your seats and get ready for an adventure!!!
HAQ…What starts as a fairy tale romance when Abbas Khan ( Emraan Hashmi) woos Shazia Bano (Yami Gautam Dhar) resulting in their nikah and all seems well until Abbas suddenly leaves and comes back with a second wife Saira and expects everyone to live together peacefully. Shazia refuses to simply accept this fate. She takes her husband to court, seeking her rights (and those of her children) under the law—especially concerning maintenance. What begins as a private dispute between husband and wife escalates into a full-blown courtroom battle. She questions the whole legality of the triple talaaq system.
The film is loosely based on the famous Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case, of 1978, which led to a major debate about how the law is applied, as our constitution gives space for each religion to follow its practices. The court case could have been dramatised and glorified but the director does a really good job and keeps it to the point and interesting.
Both Hashmi and Yami act brilliantly and bring their characters to life. You can feel the pain the first wife is going through during the court battle as despite everything she still loves her husband.
As I said earlier, I really enjoyed the film and leaves you with plenty to think about and discuss. Should you go and see it? Definitely yes… a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon!!!
A shout out to one of the producers Harman Baweja, a good friend’s son in law … great job and well done!!!
